This paper describes a new laboratory facility to study transport of radon through soil into a crawl space under controlled conditions. The facility consists of a 2 m high vessel with a diameter of 2 m to be filled with soil. The vessel is equipped with a movable lid, the space between the soil and the lid simulating a crawl space. At several heights multi-functional probes can be inserted radially into the vessel to measure near the axis of the vessel the values of pore water content, air permeability and the radon concentration in the soil gas. Results of some preparatory measurements concerning the choice of the soil to be used in the vessel are presented
