A number of compounds was synthesized and tested on suphon-amide-activity. By this is meant a bacteriostatic action in vitro, which is annihilated by 4-aminobenzoic acid (vitamin H'). The bacteriostatic activity of a compound was measured by the time, in which a culture of pneumococs in ascites-broth, in presence of the compound, becomes opaque, in comparison with a control test. In case of bacteriostasis the influence of extra added 4-aminobenzoic acid was studied in a separate test; when normal growth occured in this last test, the compound possessed sulphonamide-activity. ...
