Background: Microalbuminuria, i.e. slightly elevated urinary albumin excretion, is associated with increased cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular morbidity in the general population. Microalbuminuria has been proposed to indicate increased endothelial permeability. Unknown are the mechanisms underlying this increased vascular permeability.
