As mentioned in chapter 1, the key purpose of this thesis is to deepen our knowledge of debt contracting under asymmetric information. We have pursued this purpose from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. This has been done in six chapters, organized in two parts, in which different but related aspects of debt contracting have been addressed. While the first part explores the theoretical and empirical relevance of a standard issue of debt contracting - the signalling property of debt maturity - in the context of bank-firm relationships, the second part deals with various issues of debt contracting vis-à-vis different types of financial intermediaries in the context of household borrowing in Vietnam.
