This dissertation is primarily a study of the notion of an imaginable world, or ‘world of image’ (ʿālam al-mithāl), which is recognized as one of the most important innovations of late medieval Islamic philosophy and is unique when compared to other philosophical traditions. Unique and important as it may be, it has only received little attention so far, in scholarship. With the publication of new editions of texts crucial to the understanding of this notion, together with a newly developed methodology, this dissertation was able for the first time to study the notion of a world of image in a longue durée historical fashion.
