Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) increases the risk of ischaemic stroke and treatment with anticoagulants should be prescribed according to stroke risk. Objectives: To compare the predictive ability of the currently recommended CHA2DS2-VASc ischaemic stroke risk score with the new ATRIA stroke risk score in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Furthermore, we assessed how treatment decisions would be altered when different risk stratification would be used in daily practice. Methods: Patients with AF, not using warfarin, were assembled from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) database.
