Self-assembly in nature has many facets and occurs on all length scales. This thesis deals with selected examples on the colloidal length scale, including solid-stabilized emulsions, tobacco mosaic virus particles as well as colloidal and colloidal micelles. Part 1 of this thesis deals with the synthesis of anisotropic model colloids, utilizing self-assembly processes. Analogous to atoms that bind to form molecules, colloids with liquid patches are shown to bind with each other formin
