The department of surgery of the St. Elisabeth hospital Tilburg started in 1986 to register complications for measuring surgical outcome and create programmes with quality initiatives. This thesis describes the evolution and development of the registry against methodological concerns and in the aspect of outcome measurement. The role of a complication registry and it's utility for determining outcome and delivered care in surgery was analysed
