A new measuring method for the signal amplitude in intensity modulating fibre optic sensors is described. A reference signal is generated in the time domain. The method is insensitive for the sensitivity fluctuations of the light transmitter and the light receiver. The method is experimentally tested. It is shown how the method can be used to measure the intensity attenuation in a fibre optic microbend sensor
