The paramo ecosystem is one of the most sensitive to changes in climate and land use. These changes in physical conditions may lead to changes in species composition and their life cycles, increasing susceptibility to attack by pathogens and other species that seize the opportunity to colonize new niches. The “frailejon”, Espeletia sp., is a keystone species of the páramo, but herbivory due to phytophagous insects and fungi has recently led to the death of a large number of frailejones.
