This article examines the disputes that emerged between the Ottoman Empire and the Bosnian Muslims in the Tanzimat period and presents that the disputes were caused by the loss of special status enjoyed by the Bosnian Muslims in general and Bosnian landlords in particular. Ottoman efforts to strengthen the central authority through Tanzimat reforms weakened the local landlords and paved the road toward losing Muslim control in Bosnia
