By means of Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) measurements we compared the thermally induced switching field distribution (SFD) of sub-micron CoPt alloy and Co/Pt multilayer patterned islands with comparable magnetic properties. From statistics on hundreds of hysteresis loops we conclude that even though the switching field of the islands strongly varies, the energy barrier for switching is identical for all islands prepared from the same film. The energy barrier for islands fabricated from the alloy film is however much higher than for those fabricated from the multilayer film
