Middle School Students’ Conceptions of Infinity [Ortaokul Öğrencilerinin Sonsuzluğu Kavrayışları]

The purpose of this study was to investigate middle school students’ understanding of infinity. The sample of the study consisted of 176 students from three middle schools. To explore students’ understanding of infinity, a test including four open-ended questions was administered. Following the test, semi-structured interviews were conducted to produce in-depth data related to students’ understandings of the infinity concept. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis method. Results of the study revealed that the participants described the infinity as “having no end”, “continuing” and “never-ending” and perceived infinity “as a process that never ends". The participants’ descriptions were categorized under three different headings, namely mathematical, physical and affective. Besides, it was found that students’ descriptions include static and dynamic notions. It was observed that static infinity notion is common among students.[Bu araştırmanın amacı ortaokul öğrencilerinin sonsuzluk kavramı ile ilgili kavrayışlarını incelemektir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu üç farklı ortaokulda öğrenimine devam eden 176 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Öğrencilerin sonsuzluk ile ilgili kavrayışlarını belirlemek amacıyla 4 açık uçlu sorudan oluşan bir test hazırlanmış ve uygulanmıştır. Ortaokul öğrencilerin kavrayışlarını derinlemesine incelemek için, testin ardından,16 öğrenci ile yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen veriler nitel içerik analizi yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, öğrencilerin sonsuzluk kavramını, “sonu olmayan”, “devam eden” ve “bitmeyen” şeklinde tarif ettikleri ve sonsuzluğu sonu olmayan bir süreç olarak algıladıkları tespit edilmiştir. Öğrencilerin bu tanımları yaparken, sonsuzluk kavramını matematiksel, fiziksel ve duygusal olmak üzere üç farklı kategoride düşündükleri belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin sonsuzluk tarifleri dinamik ve statik öğeler içermektedir. Öğrencilerin büyük bir çoğunluğunda statik sonsuzluk düşüncesinin daha baskın olduğu görülmüştür.
