El artículo repasa diferencias en la forma en que la seguridad social se financia en distintos países. Se presenta evidencia de que ningún sistema de financiación es universalmente preferido al resto ni aparentemente lastra el desarrollo económico. Se usa el caso de España para plantear la hipótesis de que los distintos sistemas tienen su origen en instituciones y diferencias preexistentes a su implantación.
