In Portuguese-speaking African countries, literary production was almost always linked to historical events. It results from a complex process of building a cultural identity. The development of Portuguese-speaking African literature suggests that history and identity become, from the twentieth century, fundamental concepts for the establishment of an independent literature. This article analyses the relations between history and identity in Angolan literature, especially in José Eduardo Agualusa fiction.
