This study sought to classify the landscape of the province of Huelva (Andalusia, Spain) and validate the results, using a new application of classical multivariate methods in conjunction with GIS tools. The province was divided into 1 km x 1 km grid squares to which information was associated on four visually-perceivable variables: soil use, plant cover, lithology and relief. Grid cells were then classified using twoway indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) and ordered by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). Analysis of results yielded 8 major landscape types that were characterized by its indicator variables.
