This paper analyzes the way in which the State, through its agricultural policies, has influenced the changes and current characteristics of agriculture in the rural municipality of Ixtlán, Michoacán. It also discusses how the policies towards the Mexican countryside have been the architects in the transformation of rural life and, in turn, how these transformations were crucial to have established a phenomenon that now has implications in all areas of the life of the inhabitants of rural localities studied, such as the migration (which today is characterized by its high intensity) to United States.
