The short plays of Manuel Bretón de los Herreros (1796-1873) have been traditionally identified with a group of twenty five plays, composed in one or two acts, which were compiled within the posthumous edition of his works in 1883-1884. The present essay follows a comprehensive criterion and includes eighteen additional writings that complete the corpus of the Bretón de los Herreros’ short plays. Under the hypothesis of the existence of a self-censorship process that progressively elided such a group of comedies, this article argues how the author, his biographers, and his later critics favoured an irregular literary criticism about this significant dramatic sub-genre.
