El sistema defensivo del Castro de La Ulaña (Humada, Burgos)

The site of the hillfort of La Ulaña occupies an area of 285 hectares. Its defence system is natural escarpments and wall fortifications, which are not continous but only present in those parts of the hilìfort which are more accessible. In addition, a transversal wall divides the hillfort into two unequal parts. It is surrounded by a natural moat of 301 hectares, with a series of walls which cur it into compartments, limiting the circulation and the access to water supplies. The approaches to La Ulaña were through natural gateways, leaving the visitors immediately exposed to the inhabitants of the hillfort. This defensive system dates back to the Second Iron Age.<br><br>El castro de La Ulaña tiene una extensión de 285 has, defendidas por farallones naturales y una muralla discontinua, en aquellas zonas que resultan más accesibles; además, una muralla transversal lo divide en dos partes desiguales. Está rodeado de una vaguada de 301 has, que actúa a modo de foso natural, con una serie de muros que la compartimentaban, limitando la circulación y el acceso a los recursos hídricos.
