Our lack of understanding regarding how managers learn is in sharp contrast to the importance attached and money spend on management development. This research explores how managers acquire their competences by establishing the relationships between organizational structure, learning strategy and cereer success. The results suggest a number of directions that management development programmes may take. How organizations might teach their managers to learn is emphasized. One way to achieve this is to use the organizational structure as a mechanism for providing managers with a challenging learning environment
