Determination of leaf area in the macadamia from linear dimensions of the leaf blade = Determinação da área foliar de macadâmia a partir de dimensões lineares do limbo foliar

Measurement of leaf area is required in various agronomic studies, as it is one of the key measurements for evaluating the growth of plants. The aim of the present study therefore, was to determine the statistical models that best describe leaf area in the macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia) cv. HAES 344, from linear dimensions of the length and width of the blade. An experiment was carried out in a completely randomised design, in a scheme of split lots with five replications. Each lot comprised the cardinal points (north, south, east and west) of one plant, with the sub-lots comprising three positions on the plant (the lower, middle and upper third). The leaf area was measured using the ImageJ® public-domain software, by analysis of scanned images of the leaves. Equations were estimated from 600 leaves with linear and nonlinear regression models. The resulting equations, together with another four equations quoted in the literature for other cultivars, were validated with a sample of 200 leaves. Statistical modelling of the leaf area in adult plants of the Macadamia cv. HAES 344 can be done using leaves taken from any of the four cardinal points or three heights of the plant. Leaf area is determined by the product of the length (L) and the maximum width (W) of the leaves as an independent variable. The suggested equation for determining leaf area in leaves of adult plants of the Macadamia cv. HAES 344 is Ŷi = 1.6635+0.6968 WL. = A mensuração da área foliar é requerida em vários estudos agronômicos por ser uma das principais medidas para avaliar o crescimento das plantas. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se com o presente trabalho determinar os modelos estatísticos que melhor descrevem a área foliar de macadâmia (Macadamia integrifolia) cv. HAES 344, a partir de dimensões lineares de comprimento e largura do limbo. Um experimento foi realizado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com cinco repetições. A parcela consistiu dos pontos cardeais (norte, sul, leste e oeste) de uma planta, e as subparcelas foram as três posições na planta (terços inferior, médio e superior). A área foliar foi medida com o auxílio do software ImageJ®, de domínio público, por análise de imagens digitalizadas das folhas. Foram estimadas equações por meio de modelos de regressão linear e não linear, a partir de 600 folhas. As equações obtidas, juntamente com outras quatro equações citadas na literatura para outras cultivares, foram validadas a partir de amostra de 200 folhas. A modelagem estatística de área foliar de plantas adultas de macadâmia - cv. HAES 344 pode ser feita com uso de folhas amostradas de quaisquer dos quatro pontos cardeais e posições de altura nas plantas. A determinação da área foliar é representada com uso do produto do comprimento (C) pela máxima largura (L) das folhas como variável independente.
