The large-scale biosphere-atmosphere experiment in Amazonia (LBA) aims at enhancing knowledge of the climatological, ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrological functioning of Amazonia. It will address the effects of changes in land use and climate on these functions, including also the sustainability of development in the region and the influence of Amazonia on global climate. LBA integrates observational and modelling studies in six thematic fields: physical climate, carbon storage and exchange, biogeochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, surface hydrology and aquatic chemistry, and land use and land cover changes. LBA will enhance research capacities and networks within and between the Amazonian countries
