This article engages in analyzing some aspects of the Albanian public debate on national identity which has lately assumed new vitality. Recent Albanian history has been characterized by crucial events such as the end of communism, the Albanian revolt of 1997 and the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The overall outcome of these events is twofold. The new political situation of the western Balkans has permitted the creation of an Albanian speaking community that prevaricates the Albanian state borders. However this new circumstance has enhanced the differentiation discourses between northern gegë and southern toskë Albanians
