Exoticism or the Translation of Cultural Difference = Exotismo o la traducción de la diferencia cultural

<p>In this paper the author analyses the criteria of judgment we bring to bear on artworks in our times of movement, where people and art objects travel the world, but don’t always carry in their baggage movements of thought and opinion. In view of the contemporary situation of art as coming from anywhere, and the culturalcritical aspects inherent in that situation, he zooms in on a text from the beginning of the twentieth century as an example of how ideas about aesthetics in relation to otherness have impacted on our thinking about art «in movement», namely Victor Segalen’s Essay on Exoticism: An Aesthetics of Diversity.<br /><br /><em>En el presente artículo el autor analiza los criterios del juicio con el que estudiamos los objetos artísticos de nuestra época de movimiento, donde la gente y los objetos viajan por el mundo, pero no siempre llevan en su equipaje movimientos de pensamiento y de opinión. En vista de la situación actual del arte como algo procedente de cualquier parte, y de los aspectos de crítica cultural inherentes en esa situación, el autor se centra en un texto de comienzos del siglo XX como ejemplo del modo en que las ideas sobre la estética en relación al otro tuvieron un impacto en nuestro pensamiento del arte «en movimiento», en concreto la obra de Victor Segalen Essay on Exoticism: An Aesthetics of Diversity.</em>
