Introducing the Strategy of Lifelong Learning

This year was announced the Y ear of Lifelong Learning by the European Union. If we want to make good use of all the advantages brought by information society the information revolution must be accompanied by the revolution in learning; this the learning capacity of the en tire population will be increased. True adoption of the lifelong learning strategy means changing educational system drastically, especially eliminating the presen! monopoly of school education. Thus the institutions whose primary activity is not education (e. g. enterprises, cultural and research institutions, associations, voluntary organizations, organized groups) should be equally acknowledged as educators. Knowledge is of crucial importance for Slovenia. Although we have strong schooling tradition, much can be achieved in the field of non-formal education by reasonable and sustained policy. Various study groups, "knowledge agency" and centres for organized autonomous learning are active in our country. In orderto forma holistic lifelong learning strategy in Slovenia adult education should be included in the educational system, adequate management achieved, adequate education legislation passed and/or the present one supplemented, the network of performers and programmes defined, new centres for adult education developed as well as adequate personnel trained
