An historical and sociological approach is useful to consider the trade affecting the Adriatic basin, from ancient times until the present time. Now, sustainable development relies on a new mode of transnational cooperation: the Adriatic-Ionian macroregion. It’s a dynamic system of relations between actors in the socio-economic context, and it consists in a flexible infrastructure of organisation. The four pillars lead to future prospects, through the evolution based on genetic traits: historical, geographical, cultural and socio-economic drivers. The whole system, with the dichotomy of local/global, is conditioned by infrastructural connectivity
