As RPPNs como estratégia para a conservação da biodiversidade: O caso da chapada dos veadeiros / RPPNs as a Strategy for the Conservation of Biodiversity: The Case of the Chapada dos Veadeiros

The Private Natural Heritage Reserves - RPPNs – are units of conservation for sustainable use on private property created on a voluntary work. The restrictions which they are supposed to follow become them as similar as the fully units protected. Thus, they can promote the conservation of their habitats without a big human intervention. The Chapada dos Veadeiros, a region located in the northeast of Goiás, has 15 federal RPPNs, all of them located around the National Park of Chapada dos Veadeiros, in the buffer zone area. Chapada dos Veadeiros has been habited for a long time by several landowners and farmers and for this reason, the creation of the RPPN’s represents a viable strategy for the region, which is considered a priority area for conservation project by ONG’s like the Conservation International (CI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) by the Ministry of Environment (MMA) and the Institute for Biodiversity Conservation Chico Mendes(ICMBIO). The article demonstrates that the private reserves can and should be an important alternative for the implementation of a land planning developed in partnership with the local community. In this review, it was investigated the contribution of the private reserves in the Chapada dos Veadeiros for the local conservation biodiversity and its implementation process
