Flexural vibration was applied to specimens during the welding process to observe its effect on welding residual stresses. The study was carried out in three phases, namely, (i) investigation of the effect of amplitude of vibration, (ii) investigation of the effect of time of vibration, and (iii) investigation of the effect of high frequency vibration. The results of the present study provide a basis for relieving the residual stresses in practice. It has been shown that there is an optimum applied stress that will maximise the reduction in both longitudinal and transverse residual stresses.
