SYSTEMATIC STUDIES OF TYPHILOCYBINE LEAFHOPPERS OF VEGETABLE AND FRUIT PLANTS IN PAKISTAN

Samad, Khurshid, Systematic Studies Of Typhlocybine Leafhoppers Of Vegetable And Fruit Plants In Pakistan\ud \ud The work constitutes the systematic studies of typhlocybine leafhoppers infesting fruit trees and vegetable plants in Pakistan. Fruit trees, including apple, grape vine, apricot, plum, peach, pear, fig, cherry, mulberry, walnut, almond, in northern hilly areas of Pakistan, and Zizyphus sp., guava, and citrus, as well as vegetables most commonly grown in plains of Punjab and Sind were checked for the typhlocybine leafhoppers. On the whole, fourteen genera and fifty-three species of typhlocybine leafhoppers, of which one genus and forty-two species are new to science, have been studied\ud \ud The study revealed that the tribe Alebrini has a scanty representation, and in the present work no specimen of the tribe was collected from fruit trees and vegetable plants in Pakistan. Tribe Dikraneurini is also not well represented and only one new genus Hazaraneura based on a single new species was recorded. In the tribe Typhlocybini four genera and seventeen species were studied, of which sixteen species are new. The tribe Empoascini is well represented in Pakistan. Five genera and twenty species, of which seventeen species are new, have been studied in the present work. The tribe Erythroneurini is represented by four genera and fifteen species of which eight species are new to science from Pakistan\ud \ud Nearly 30000 leafhoppers studied during the present work were collected from about 58 species of host and food plants from all over Pakistan. The species of Tyophlocyba Germar and Euperyx Curtis were usually recorded on fruit plants, and those of Empoasca Walsh on vegetable plants. E. punjabensis Pruthi had the widest host range as well as geographical distribution\ud \ud The new genus and species are illustrated with the help of forty-two figures in twenty two plates. Lists of host/food plants, localities of collection of typhlocybine species, as well as a check list of typhlocybines known from Pakistan have been given in appendi
