ANALYTICAL STUDY OF NGOS PERFORMANCE IN POVERTY ALLEVIATION AT HYDERABAD DIVISION

This analytical study investigates the performance of NGOs in poverty alleviation at Hyderabad division. The study is based on field work including visit to 40 villages and interview of 500 persons getting the financial assistance from the NGOs. Information on personal profile of selected sample of the poor, total family income, type and size of family, discussion about NGOs and their role in alleviating poverty from the universe of the study etc. was collected through a well designed questionnaire. Their opinion and comments about the working of NGOs and the benefits derived by the poor community were obtained. Suggestions for improvement and better utilization of sources were got through discussion after having them in confidence. The data thus collected was analyzed by using statistical techniques including SPSS to the data mentioned in contingency tables. The chi-square test was applied to test the existence of the relationship between the two variables of hypothesis. Correlation coefficient and p-value has been derived to check the nature of relationship.\ud \ud The results show that the huge majority of the respondents are of the opinion that they stand a lot below of the current income status of the household. The data suggest that the prevalence of poverty is more observed in rural areas where people live in joint family system. The majority of respondents are illiterate or primary passed. They are laborers working on daily wages. The bulk of respondents reported that in recent years their standard of living has declined. Due to poverty the respondents had borrowed money. They held the view that they were incapable to meet the basic needs of life. The results indicate that respondents were fairly depressed and dejected. Almost all of the respondents were of the opinion that NGOs are not making people self-reliant. The respondents were of the view that NGOs were emphasizing only one or two sectors, whereas an integrated approach to poverty alleviation is needed
