Cyanide Toxicity from Cassava Leaves (Manihot esculenta) Extract against Mice (Mus musculus)

Cyanide is a toxic substance that is highly lethal and Cassava leaves (Manihot esculenta) contain cyanide which is suspected of having a toxic effect and commonly used as an animal feed.. This research aims to determine the potential of acute toxicity of cassava leaves (Manihot esculenta) extract which is seen from LD50 based on Lu criteria and clinical symptoms which appear in mice after the administration of the extract.This research is a pure experimental posttest control group design by using 24 mice which is consisted of 4 groups namely the negative control (NA CMC), cassava leaves with dose of 3.879 mg/kg, cassava leaves with dose of 4.433 mg/kg, and cassava leaves with dose of 4.987 mg/kg. Observations were made 0-3 hours after the administration of a single dose and 24 hours. Next, the observations was continued until day 4.The observations included physical symptoms. Data were analyzed by Thomson and Weil method. The observed parameter is LD50's value and range. LD50's value which is obtained is 5.817 mg/kg and the range is 4.361 - 7.748 mg/kg. Based on toxicity classification according to Lu (1995), cassava leaves (Manihot esculenta) extract are included in toxic category (moderately toxic) because it has 500 - 5000 mg/kg of LD50's value and supported by cynical symptoms such as lethargic, hyperlacrimation, paralysis, eye irritation, bloody diarrhea, cyanosis, and death in mice which shows toxic symptoms.
