Dos documentos aos formulários, no norte de Portugal: : análise tipológica no contexto histórico e cultural dos séculos XI-XIII

The text below was elaborated for an International Congress under the general theme – Formularies – which we decided to study in Northern Portugal. Accordingly, after the introduction, in which we define the objectives, mention the sources to be used and indicate the methodology to be followed, we make an analysis of the two groups of formularies, which, according to their respective structures, it was possible to detect, and we classify as simple and more complex concepts, in due course explained. This first distinction has forced us to analyses of different scopes, where also some unexpected conclusions have emerged.Thus, in relation to simple formularies, the most characteristic of them is used in rendering obedience to the Archbishop of Braga by prelates of the dioceses of Portugal and from across the border, its suffragans; on their turn, the ones classified as more complex, through the many rich invocations, harangues and comminatory clauses, allowed comparative analyses and led to results so far unsuspected. Pursuing this method, it was possible to observe and conclude that some of the formularies used in the documentation of Northern Portugal had been long in acts of Asturian and Leonese monarchs as well as of private institutions. Although it is not possible to determine the paths followed by these formularies until the present day, we can now safely say that there was clear influence of diplomatic practices of the kingdoms of Oviedo and León on documentation issued in Northern Portugal, thus opening up new prospects for research in this area
