In the submitted article the authors express their view on some present trends in the assessment of environments of the origin and the structure of coal-bearing formations in the Upper Silesian Basin. Attention is paid to a relation between traditional and modern sedimentological models of the origin of sediments and coal seams, opinions on the cyclic structure of coal-bearing formations and on the issues of coal seam identification and correlation.
