Since the rise in food prices in 2007-2008, agriculture is again at the front of the international scene. Political and human consequences of the turmoil in international markets have been significant in many countries and some had their government overthrown. In this context, we focus on rice, a cereal that guarantees the minimum caloric intake for more than 50% of the population, and on the rice farmer, the first link in the production chain. First we review the history of rice culture, the recent market developments and the rice crisis of 2007-2008.
