The lifetime prediction of pressurized water reactor (PWR) components, especially the steam generators (SG), is of high interest. Several works have been dedicated to the understanding of the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) mechanisms. However these mechanisms are still relatively poorly understood. The oxide layer should play an important role. A methodology, combining in situ ToF-SIMS and XPS techniques, has been developed to determine the oxidation kinetics and to understand the oxide layer growth mechanisms.
