This thesis studies the development of new statistical models for forest structure assessment using lidar data. Lidar is an active remote sensing technology based on the analysis of a reflected beam of light. Incorporated into an airborne platform, it is used to describe forest stands on large areas in order to improve traditional forest inventories. Identification of new lidar variables to characterize the various components of forest structure made it possible to better reflect stand complexity. These variables helped to improve existing models used for resource mapping. Models have been validated on different forest types, characterized by various canopy structures.
