In the early 2000s, development of metastases was shown to be strongly limited by a phenomenon of cellular dormancy. Indeed, after extravasation in a distant organ, most of the disseminated cancer cells that survive enter into a reversible quiescent that is called dormant state. The phenomenon of dormancy is also the cause of late metastatic recurrences because dormancy confers long-term cellular survival and resistance to chemotherapy.
