International audienceThe function of archaeological sites is rarely assessed on the basis of ceramic assemblages. However, the complexity of ceramic assemblages measured in terms of number and origin of the social entities underlying their production, could be a relevant proxy for assessing “meta-functions”. Measuring the complexity of ceramic assemblages implies considering technical, petrographical, and morpho-stylistic groups, and techno-petrographic groups successively, referring to the identity of producers. Such an analytical procedure has been applied on ceramic assemblages belonging to ten Chalcolithic sites from the South Levant. Different degrees of complexity are observable.
