The adrenocortical axis is a major component of metabolic regulation and biological adaptation processes. Its activity and functions are strongly influenced by genetic factors. The present experiments were designed to address the hypothesis that genetic selection for a more active adrenocortical axis could improve robustness. They were carried out with purebred Large White pigs. We first confirmed that the cortisol response to ACTH is highly heritable (h2 = 0.68 ± 0.12) in this population and can therefore be used for a divergent selection experiment.
