The integration of renewable energy into the production of electricity, forces us to conceive innovative charge storage systems to deal with the issue of the intermittent supply of wind and solar-generated electricity. At present, electric storage devices range from electrochemical capacitors, which can supply high power densities but suffer from low energy densities, to batteries, which are considered as a high-energydensity and low-power-density technology. The difficulty of combining the high power density of supercapacitors with the high energy density of batteries creates a large free area in the Ragone diagram that is targeted by new hybrid energy systems.
