International audienceThe aim of this paper is to study the semantic evolution of the concepts of “Asia” and “Asiatic” in both the archaic Greek lyric poetry and Aeschylus’s works. Particular attention is devoted to the process through which the term Ἀσία – initially used to designate the Anatolian norther-western region – ended up indicating what the Greeks considered to be the Asiatic continent: it seems plausible that such a semantic development is to be linked to the political events which took place in Asia Minor and in the Near East during the 7th and the 6th centuries BC.
