Historías em Colisão - Histories in Collison

Solo exhibition and public artwork at the Centro Cultural de Cascais in Portugal. This exhibition was based around the development of a research project that included work on the methodologies of cities, the history of architectural interventions into landscape and the use of materials in the development of architectural structures. This included research into the style of architecture known as Ablaq that derived from the Middle Eastern practice of using alternating bands of light and dark materials in the construction of buildings. This decorative style was subsequently introduced to Europe in the middle ages and used primarily in the construction of churches in Northern Italy and Sardinia. The exhibition was in two parts. A large-scale public artwork was located in a public space in front of the Cultural Centre adjacent to a 17th century fortress and a new contemporary architectural intervention. The sculpture was constructed in granite and used the process of Ablaq to create a metaphor for a linear journey that I frequently made between the stone factories where I worked near Lisbon and the stone quarries in the countryside. The second part was installed in a gallery inside the Cultural Centre and consisted of several series of drawings, and small-scale sculptures. The exhibition was accompanied with a fully illustrated catalogue with an essay written by me titled Historías Que Unem - Bridging Histories
