X-ray absorption Spectroscopy makes it possible to identify the local atomic structure around cations in ion-exchanged glasses. EXAFS experiments demonstrate that the substitution of sodium by silver leads to local rearrangements below TG whereas the incorporation of Rb or Cs does not generate a cation specific environment. Fe K-edge XANES spectra confirm that the oxidation of Fe2+ is accompanied by the reduction of silver ions. A structural interpretation of the modified mixed mobile effect as a result of an ion exchange has been developed
