Konvensjonell eller datastyrt anestesi? - En pilotstudie som sammenligner smerte, trykk og ubehag ved intra-oral injeksjon

Many people struggle with odontophobia and intra-oral injection phobia. This is often because the injection of local anesthetics is associated with discomfort or pain. Lately, computerized anesthesia has been used as a replacement for the conventional syringe. The aim of this study was to investigate the patient's subjective sense of pressure, pain, and discomfort when receiving injections with the computerized method and the conventional injection method. A total of 20 participants without odontophobia were visually and audibly blinded and received a total of four injections, two on each side of the upper jaw in the oral vestibule. The participants were asked to assess pain, pressure, and discomfort of each injection on a scale ranging from 0 to 10, and evaluate the total experience of the four injections. Finally, they were asked to specify which injection they thought was given with a conventional syringe and which was given with the computerized method (the Wand). There were no significant differences in pressure and pain between the Wand and the conventional syringe, nor between the right and left sides of the oral cavity. All participants reported that the overall experience was good. This study indicates that there is no significant difference in pain and pressure between the two injection methods. Computerized anesthesia might, however, be a good option for patients with odontophobia or intra-oral injection phobia because it can be presented to the patient as an alternative to the conventional syringe, and because the operator has a higher level of control with the distributed dosage
