Rearfoot entities

This chapter deals with pain in the heel that might have several local differential diagnoses, these being plantar fasciitis or plantar heel pain, tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction or adult-acquired flatfoot, tarsal tunnel syndrome and calcaneal fractures. Several authors have suggested that plantar fasciitis, tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction and tarsal tunnel syndrome should be viewed as a triad, hence the focus of this chapter. Calcaneal stress fractures, much like the foregoing conditions, are of insidious onset. Non-specific heel pain such as fat-pad contusion / bruising has not been covered in this chapter because, although it might be a differential diagnosis, its presentation is quite non-specific with little research coverage
