Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing is used as a modulation method in many wireless communications standards. It is robust against signal distortion in multipath fading channel and timing synchronization errors. With the emerge of the concept of Internet of Things, the modulation is required to work with low received signal power and discontinuous reception. Frequency synchronization needs to be accurately attained to suppress self-inflicted interference and standard requirements are met. The OFDM modulation scheme is presented in detail and a signal model is derived to show the effect of timing and frequency synchronization errors.
