There are many procedures, of varying complexity, for ranking the members of a social group in a dominance hierarchy. Roughly, two types of method can be distinguished, one in which the dominance matrix is reorganized such that some numerical criterion, calculated for the matrix as a whole, is minimized or maximized, and one that aims to provide a suitable measure of individual overall success, from which a rank order can be directly derived
