Within a future sustainable society, biomass is expected to become one of the major renewable resources for the production of both food, feed, materials, chemicals, fuels, power and/or heat. The development and implementation of biorefinery processes – i.e. the sustainable processing of biomass into a spectrum of marketable products and energy – is an absolute necessity to meet the vision, i.e. to use the available biomass as efficiently as possible, and with the lowest environmental impact.
