textabstractWorldwide esophageal cancer is a signifi cant and an increasing health problem. In 2005, there were 497,700 new cases, and the prevalence is expected to increase by approximately 140% by 2025. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) accounts for most of the cases of esophageal cancer worldwide (2); however, in a number of Western countries, including the Netherlands, there has been a modest decline in the incidence of ESCC and a steep rise in the frequency of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC)
