Most people think of trust as the bonding force between people in romantic, professional, and family relationships. Of growing importance however is public trust: trust in organizations that are not represented by a single person, such as companies, non-profit organizations and governmental institutions. The present dissertation takes existing knowledge on interpersonal trust as a starting point to investigate antecedents and consequences of public trust. The first part of the dissertation sheds light on how perceptions of competence, benevolence and integrity affect trust in for-profit firms.
